When did you start your business? I began selling on Etsy March of last year, and this year I launched my own website.

Why did you decide to start your business & why did you choose the type of business you chose? My family and I are sensitive to regular fragrances. I discovered that natural essential oils did not cause the adverse reactions, and it opened up a new world for me. I began blending scents and creating lovely perfumes. It’s become quite an addiction!

What is your favorite thing about being in business for yourself? I love that I am building something independence for the future of my family and me. Also it makes me feel so good that other people love my work so much!

What turned out to be harder than you thought? Marketing, which is funny because I work in marketing as a graphic designer! It’s a whole different ball game when it’s your baby.

Looking back, what is one thing you know now, but wish you knew back then? I wish I had anticipated better just how much time I had to put into it.

Do you participate in any business groups (mentoring, networking, etc) ? I’m a part of EGCG–Etsy Green and Clean Guild. It is a group that promotes truth in labeling and education about bath and body. They are a fabulous group of women, and we help each other build our businesses.

As a business owner, it can be easy to work all the time – do you have any tips for balancing your business and your personal life? It can be tough. I am continually working on becoming more organized. The more you have prepared ahead of time, the more quickly you can fulfill your business work.

What have been some of your best business successes? Most recently, I now have perfumes for sale in a beautiful boutique in LA! In a store, people can experience the scent in person whereas on the internet you have to imagine.

What are you planning to do with your business in the future? I’d like to have my products available in more B&M stores. I will continue formulating new fragrances and keep my current customers coming back for more!
