My “Big Secret”

I’ve never really talked about this before… I guess you can call it my “big secret.” Well, one of the reasons I became so interested in learning how to build websites and make money online is because of what happened to me 2 years ago…
Out of the blue my husband told me he wanted a divorce. I was stunned. And I had no back up plan.
I got married young, right after I turned 21 (and had been living with my husband since I was 19). Not long after we were married, we moved to Alaska. I didn’t even have time to finish my degree.
And so for years, I was a housewife. I cooked, cleaned and did everything i could to support my husband’s career. Now, in 2003 I did start working from home part-time, but I wasn’t exactly bringing in a lot of money. The most I ever made in a month was about a thousand dollars.
All of a sudden, I was faced with the prospect of supporting myself. Something i had never done, even though i was almost 29. It was not a fun time in my life.
Long story short, I found a job as a marketing coordinator, and my husband called me about two months after he dropped his bomb to explain that he wanted to stay together. We did…
But I knew that I had to change something. I could no longer rely on him. I didn’t know if our marriage would survive or not. One thing I did know is that I never wanted to be in that position again. I wanted to make enough money to support myself, no matter what happened.
I am very proud to say that 2 years later, my husband had to borrow money from me to pay all his bills last month. ha ha!! (okay, I guess that sounds mean, but I’ve EARNED it!)
As we (in the US) celebrate Independence Day, I encourage all of you to put your best efforts into your business. My best wish for all of you, is that you are fully independent and are making enough money to not only get by, but also have a few extras.
It is the best present you can ever give yourself.
I made the front page of the paper today…….

Indie Biz Chicks Day Is Just Around The Corner!
Indie Biz Chicks Day is May 9. This is a day to celebrate women in independent business. To help me celebrate, I asked some of my favorite business women (including Alice Seba, Kelly McCausey, Carrie Lauth) to donate some learning tools to help you get ahead in your business.
When I decided to start learning about internet marketing two years ago, these are the women I turned to. They have helped me immensely over the years, and I cannot thank them enough for participating.
You can learn more about these women and the gifts they are donating by visiting http://www.indiebizchicks.com/ibcday.html. Don’t forget to sign up for the gifts!
How Much Should You Be Spending On Advertising???
Okay - so here I go, sticking my nose in to things again… ha ha. Anyhow, I was on a forum just a few moments ago, and the question that was asked was basically, how much should someone spend on advertising…. Well, here’s my answer:
‘With advertising, it’s all about calculating your ROI - as in your “return on investment.”
One business owner may spend 10 hours doing free advertising, and get 1 sale out of it, where another simply pays $20 for an ad and gets 10 sales. Obviously, spending the $20 was a far better ROI.
I’m NOT saying that free advertising is bad. I actually offer a tips list of 100 Free (and almost free) Advertising Methods (http://indiebizchicks.com/wp/hot-100-ecourse/)
I think that what is most important to realize is that there is no “right” or “wrong” answer on how much to spend on advertising. The results will be different for each business. Experiment with several things, track your ads, and then focus on the type of advertising that is pulling in the results.
(and just in case anyone is interested in learning more about advertising, one of this month’s guides in The IndieBizChicks.com Members Center is all about advertising and will help you figure out your ROI, where to place ads, how to get the most targeted advertising, etc. Find it at http://www.IndieBizChicks.com/mc.html)’
What do you think?
What can I say? Wisdom teeth suck!
Okay, Okay - I know I’ve been missing in action again. I had my upper wisdom teeth out at the end of March and then my lower wisdom teeth out in April and it’s been a long, slow painful recovery (and I might have to get MORE bone cut out! Ouch!). But the good thing is that I’m starting to feel better and everything will be back to normal soon (as in lots of updated content)!
Thanks for your patience while I was recovering : )
