Don’t Blog About This

by Crissy on September 2, 2008

Unless you’ve been living on Mars for the last few years, you already know how popular blogs are. It almost seems like everyone has one – from the sixth grader down the street to the leading business CEOs.

When blogs first came on the scene they were pretty much kept to a personal level. Known as “web logs,” they were essentially online journals. Today, the term has been shortened to “blog” and they are now used for all kinds of purposes, including business.

When a business owner takes to the blogosphere, they’re ahead of the game. Blogs are a great way to market a business, communicate with customers, and build buzz.

Sounds good, right? But it isn’t always that easy. There are some things that a business blogger should just say “no” to.

The biggest no-no in business blogging is probably the dreaded “TMI Syndrome.” It’s okay to get a little personal on your blog, but try not to over share. Do you really want your readers to know about all of your life’s dilemmas?

If you spend your blog time whining and crying or use it as a confessional you’ll look unprofessional. You’ll be losing customers. So keep your blog business focused and write about your personal life in your diary.

Now, that doesn’t mean you should start filling your blog with all kinds of boring, off topic stuff, either. Instead, write about things your customers would naturally be interested in. Just make sure they have something to do with your business so that it makes sense for the info to be on your blog.

Another thing to stay away from is writing about the same thing, over and over. If you found one topic that really resonates with your readers, great! But that doesn’t mean they want to be constantly hit over the head with it. Find a complementary topic and start writing.

Don’t blog about stuff you hate. Your contempt will show through in your post. No one wants to read something that sounds like you are writing through gritted teeth. Find something you actually have passion for and write about that instead.

It goes without saying, and I’m sure you know this, but your business blog shouldn’t have any obscene or racial material on it. It’s in poor taste. Period.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can be sure that your blog will be a fun place for your readers to visit.
