If you manage to stay healthy this entire winter and not catch any type of cold, well, consider yourself very lucky. But if you do get sick… I want you to give yourself a break.

Yep. That’s right. I’m telling you to take a little time off of your business. And don’t feel guilty about it.

I just spent the last week and a half feeling like h-e-double-hockey-sticks. It wasn’t fun. Everything hurt, including my head which was full of pressure from my sinus congestion.

I made some attempts to work and catch up on email, but I wasn’t getting much done.

Instead of feeling guilty over it, I got a lot of rest. I drank a lot of fluids. I took my medicine. And, I am finally starting to feel better. So much better, that I’m writing several blog posts tonight and post dating them. I would never have had the energy or stamina to write several blog posts in one sitting last week!

Climb into the mysterious cavern that is data mining. Data mining, or the effort to search social networks and CRM databases for profiles of consumer trends, is a way to stay ahead of the curve with regard to actionable information about customers, products, employees, and suppliers. If you are able to comb through databases without violating privacy laws or breaching customer identity, you will be invaluable to marketing firms. Many experts are certain that data mining is the next major phase of online marketing, with social networks providing a near endless reservoir of analytics.

Know the in’s and out’s of location-based marketing. Another major trend in marketing revolves around mobile applications that allow users to embed messages about local businesses and check-in to locations. Place-based messaging is a new form of social networking that pulls the consumer through the windows of their laptops and drops right on the street where they can share their experiences with a mobile network of consumers and venues. Foursquare and Gowalla are the most successful examples at present.

Learn to speak the multiple coding languages. The demands of software are costly both in terms of money and time. Whether you’re trying to develop bid management software or mobile apps, if you are proficient with PHP, C++, Python, Ajax, Perl, Java, or any of the other coding languages you will be in a prime position to demand hefty fees from clients or launch your own brilliant start-up.

SEOs will be the new CEOs. Search engine optimization is the wild west, an unregulated frontier of Internet marketing that can make or break a new business. Almost mystical in nature, SEO is the lifeblood of monetizing online campaigns and though it is constantly changing, one thing that is constant is its importance.

Understand the role of graphic design in online marketing. Graphic design, especially combined with a knowledge of coding, can allow you to flourish in a freelance market. Your list of clients can range from Fortune 500 companies to wide-eyed start-ups who may just be sitting on the next great idea. With how important a strong Internet presence is, high quality professional graphic design will be a highly sought commodified service for years to come.

It may take years to be able to put these five strategies into practice. In fact, learning all of them could be next to impossible. But even embracing one of them could work miracles for your freelance career.

Angela has personally earned money with all 3 suggestions she provides (and so have I). I know these strategies work!

Have you ever thought about teaching an online class?

I think you should. Yes, I mean YOU.

For starters, it’s a great way to expand your business, and make extra money, simply by sharing what you know!

I don’t want to bum you out by saying this, but there are going to be people out there who NEVER buy your products or services. For example, let’s say that you are a blog designer. There are people out there who don’t have the money – or who just simply refuse to hire someone to change the background color or font on their blog.

They may not want to hire you to do it for them, but they would pay to take a class and learn how to do it themselves. By offering that class, you are able to earn money that you wouldn’t have been able to earn before.

If you’re not sure what kind of class you could teach, here are some ideas to get you started:

1) Crafty Classes – Do you know how to knit, sew, create handmade cards, make jewelry, or some other crafty good-ness? You can earn money to teach others how to do it! And you can teach them from the comfort of your own home by holding an online class!

2) Self-Improvement Classes –  Do you know how to de-stress, have a knack for organizing things, or have some secret tips on making healthy meals? Lots of people would pay to learn these things!

3) “Kid-Centered” Classes –  Do you have tips on homeschooling, avoiding temper tantrums, teaching baby sign language, etc? Lots of parents would be interested in learning these things…

4) Budgeting Classes –  Are you a whiz with coupons? Do you know how to make a dollar stretch farther than anyone would believe? Hold you own online class!

5) Computer Classes – Are you good with Photoshop? Can you create a database with ease? Can you teach people how to set up labels within Gmail? There are people who don’t know how to do these things – but want to learn them!

Just because you didn’t get a Master’s in Information Technology, doesn’t mean that you can’t start an online business. If you are already pretty comfortable with a computer and with the internet, there are plenty of online tutorials regarding setting up blogs and websites can really help get you started. Many online entrepreneurs will even offer little marketing tidbits that can help you spread the word about your business.

However, if you look at a computer and start to shutter, but know that it holds the key to your financial independence, you may want to consider enrolling in a few courses designed to help you better understand them. Marketing, computer science, and web design courses can all greatly help out anyone interested in working online.

You don’t necessarily have to give up your day job either in order to take a few of these courses. Many cities offer continuing education courses through a local career center which offer in-class instruction. If sitting in a class isn’t something you are interested in, there are many online universities, such as the University of Phoenix, that offer a variety of courses. You can even choose to pursue one of their online degrees in either Marketing, Business, or even Web Design which could greatly help you in the future.

However, there is no need for a full commitment either. Although online degrees generally allow students the option to do class work whenever they have free time, not everyone is ready for a full-time commitment. Choosing to go back to school full-time is like having a full-time job, and isn’t for everyone. But you can still take the courses you need to gain the knowledge you want through online universities without having to make the full-commitment. You can even write off these courses through continuing education tax benefits if you so choose.

Starting an online business can be relatively easy. It’s keeping the business prosperous enough to fully support you that can be difficult. Knowledge and know how generally offer you the best chance of success when starting a business so if your computer skills are pretty terrible, consider giving yourself the additional time needed to hone your skills. There’s no shame in going back to school – especially if it puts you on the right path to financial independence.

Newsletters can help you fix this. When someone signs up for your newsletter, you get to keep in touch with them. You can let them know about new products / services and sales you are having.

A newsletter can bring people back to your site / blog. And that makes all the difference!
