How To Use Long Tail Marketing

| October 1, 2009 | 4 Comments

Would you like to get front page Google results? Of course you would! Long tail marketing can help you do that.

When someone enters words into a search engine, they try to be as concise as possible.  we’ve been taught that the more words we use, the more targeted our search and the better the results will be.  Your potential website visitors are using specific keywords, grouped together. By finding out what those phrases are, and putting them on your website, you will be at the top of the search engine when someone uses that same phrase in a search.

Use a keyword finder (such as Wordtracker) to find out what words your target market is using. When you find a phrase that is being searched for a lot, conduct a Google search to find out how many competing pages are using that phrase.  When you do your Google search, make sure you put the phrase in quotation marks. You want to find out how many pages are competing for that exact phrase. Try to find a phrase with less than 10,000 results.

Once you’ve found a phrase that you like – one that a lot of people are searching for but has few competing pages, take that phrase and implement it onto your site. For example, you could write an article or blog post, using that phrase a couple of times. Or you can submit the article to an article directory like Ezine Articles and include an author bio link to your website.

Keep an eye on your statistics to see if that phrase starts bringing you traffic. Also, do periodic Google searches with that phrase to see if you are landing on the first or second page of results.

With a little trial and error, this method can bring you a lot of new traffic.

  2. [...] Use Keywords: You will greatly enhance your search engine results if you use keywords that people are looking for. Let’s go back to the example of the virtual assistant for a minute. Let’s say she specialized in working with real estate agents. By doing some research, she may find that “real estate VA,” “virtual assistants who help real estate agents,” and “real estate agents who use VAs” might be popular search phrases. (I did not research those – those are just examples!) For instructions on how to find and use keywords, read this post. [...]
