I first got the idea for this website in the summer of 2006. It’s hard not to get nostalgic about that time period during the summer months. I was so excited about starting this site. It’s important to note that I didn’t know HOW to start a site – but that didn’t matter.
I was full of energy, excitement, and motivation. I wanted to make this happen! Of course, it took more than feeling amped to make this site a reality. Here are the top five things I did for my biz back then:
I became a sponge.
I needed to learn a lot of things, and I needed to learn them fast. I spent hours on Google, researching how to start a website. I found some great websites that offered ecourses and podcasts. I didn’t have an Mp3 player back then, so I burned the audio onto CDs and listened to them while driving. I emailed people who had sites I liked and I asked them questions. If there was an opportunity to learn something, I jumped on that opportunity.
I invested in myself and my biz.
Remember – I was just starting out with my business. I didn’t have money in the bank. But I knew I would need certain things. I bought a domain. I bought web hosting. I paid for an autoresponder service and a shopping cart. I bought information products (ebooks, paid forum) and I purchased coaching from people who were where I wanted to be. I knew that learning from these people was an investment in my future. And yes, it obviously paid off.
I dreamed BIG.
When I first started thinking about creating this site, I dreamed about and thought about it all the time. And I dreamed BIG. I didn’t just dream about creating it — I dreamed about the people who would read it. I didn’t just dream about making a few dollars, I dreamed about making a full time income. At that point, all I had were dreams, so I decided to dream big. And honestly, I don’t think you should ever stop dreaming. I’m still dreaming about new products and services that I can offer through this site. I dream about other blogs that I want to start.
I took action.
Look – you can sit around and day dream all day but it isn’t going to do you any good if you don’t take action. I definitely spent a lot of time dreaming about what I wanted to achieve, and I also spent a lot of time learning about how to make it happen. But here’s the key: I got off my ass and spent a lot of time working to make those things happen.
I would stay up late at night, working on my site – I built the original in HTML – and then I found out about WordPress and started over, learning about CSS and PHP. And if I wasn’t working on my code, I was writing blog posts and info products. And somewhere in between all that I was using social media to get the word out about what I was doing.
I believed in myself.
I had no reason to believe that starting a website was going to be worth the time or money I was investing in it. Note – I said I had “no reason” to believe it. That didn’t matter. I did believe in it. I believed in myself. I knew that I could do this and that I could make it happen. I had a lot of people tell me that it was a stupid idea. What if I had listened to them? Instead of listening to a bunch of idiots, believe in yourself, and listen to yourself!
