If you watch the show “Mad Men,” you’ll know that Don Draper is a fantastic ‘ad man.’ He’s good looking, charming, and has a way with words that will make your head spin.
Some of his ads make you laugh and others pull at your heart strings – but they all make you want to buy the product or service that he’s creating the ads for.
What about your ads? Do they make people want to buy your product or service? If your sales aren’t coming in they want you them to be – the answer is “no.”
It’s time for you to unleash your inner Don Draper.
Don Draper knows that the secret to good copywriting is pulling people in. Your words need to entice them.
Copywriting is “sales writing.” You are writing “copy” whenever you write something to promote a product – including item descriptions, sales pages, blog post, Facebook status updates, tweets, etc.
Being a good copywriter is essential for your business. If you are not pulling people in and making them want to buy your product, your sales will suffer.
I like to give the example of a coffee maker. If you were trying to sell someone a coffee maker, your first idea might be to tell them the features – such as an automatic timer or a brewing time of 60 seconds.
That sounds great – but it doesn’t pull people in.
Instead, tell them what the coffee maker will do for them. Tell them the benefits!
This is what I would say:
“The XYZ Coffee Maker has many benefits – the best being that it gives you time. We all know that the morning rush is the most dreaded time of day. You’re trying to get out of the door on time to get to take your kids to school and get to the office. All you want is a cup of coffee to give you that little extra push, but who has time for that with a traditional coffee maker?
The XYZ Coffee maker solves that problem with an automatic timer. All you need to do is set your coffee maker the night before. If you want your coffee ready at 6, just set it and go to sleep for a good night’s rest. With a total brewing time of only 60 seconds, your coffee will be hot and ready for you when you wake up. Say goodbye to the morning rush and say hello to XYZ Coffee maker, giving you the perfect cup of coffee everyday, with time to enjoy it.”
Do you see the difference? Are you ready to go out and buy the fictional XYZ Coffee Maker? I am!
