You actually aren’t required to apply for copyright protection. You own the copyright to what you create whether or not you registered it. It does help to register, however, when you later want to enforce your copyright against an infringer.
But if someone wants absolute protection, they should file the paperwork. I mean, technically, yes, if you create something, you own it, but unfortunately, there are lots of people out there who will steal stuff…
