Shopping from home is very common today. You just pop online and you have access to all of your favorite stores. But, of course, people have been shopping from home long before the internet came around. A century ago, people could order from The Sears Catalog. It was a lot more convenient than hooking up your horse and buggy and making the trek out to your nearest town.
Around 25 years ago, a home shopping channel called QVC debuted. The letters stand for “Quality, Value, Convenience.” If you’ve never watched it, you may be scoffing at me right now. Well, put a lid on your hoity-toity attitude. QVC isĀ the 5th most watched channel in America!
In my opinion, watching QVC can also help you with your business. The hosts are selling products 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They use words and phrases that make people want to buy their products. Watch the channel for a half hour and write down some of the phrases that are said.
As you are watching, pay attention to what words are making you want to buy different products. This can give you some great ideas for the copywriting and item descriptions on your own website!
Also, take note how the hosts talk to the callers. I watch QVC and I have heard some people call in and ask some ridiculous questions. But the hosts always act like it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever heard. And they are quick on their feet! They listen to the callers and answer them with a reason to buy the product. Remember – when you are selling your products, always give your customer a reason why they need it. Let them know how the product is going to make their life easier and better.
If you sell any of your products in person at craft shows, trade shows, etc, pay attention to how QVC decorates their sets and makes the product look more appealing. Also, take note of how the hosts demonstrate the product, show different uses for it, etc.
You really will be amazed at what you can learn from QVC!

What an interesting suggestion! Sometimes I feel like I’m at a disadvantage trying to sell my products because I don’t have a lot of retail experience (growing up I always worked food service). Now I’ll have to start watching QVC while I work to develop my sales vocabulary!
