If you’re on Twitter, you know all about the “re-tweet,” where someone else posts what you’ve already said on the site. In the old days, you would put a RT in front of the post, but re-tweets became so popular, that Twitter put in a little tool to help you re-tweet quickly and easily.
Getting re-tweeted is a goal on Twitter. It helps you get more followers, more traffic to your site, and more sales for your biz! As Martha would say, re-tweets are a very “good thing.”
But what about a “Re-Instagram” – where another person takes a screenshot of your photo onto their phone, and then re-posts it to Instagram.
A well-known blogger has been doing this – a lot. And it’s even pictures of people’s kids. She gives credit to the person who originally posted the picture, but I admit, I feel a little icky about this.
It’s one thing if it’s a picture of something that someone has for sale in their Etsy shop. If you re-Instagram that pic, it helps the person’s chances of selling the item, since more people will see it. I am also okay with the idea of re-Instagramming a photo at an event where you are at.
For example, if you are at a conference and you’re in the back row, and can’t get a good shot of the speaker, but you look on Instagram and someone already posted a great shot, then fine. Go ahead and re-Instagram, giving that other person credit for the photo.
But when it comes to something personal, like a picture of someone’s child or even their new couch, I think the line is a little blurry. Look, if you think it’s the cutest kid, ever, or if it’s the couch that you’ve been looking for, and you just have to show everyone that photo, please ask the person for permission. AND once you get permission, please comment on the photo “re-posted with permission.”
It’ll make you look a lot less creepy to people like me.
I want to hear your thoughts! Are you okay with people re-Instagramming your photos?
If someone reinstagrammed a photo of my daughter I would tell them to take it down.
I guess it depends on the photo and the situation …. If I were at an event and the photo was of something/someone there then I probably wouldn’t mind so much – events are sharable like that. But if it was a picture of my kids or my pets or even of the cool new whatever that I just bought then I think I’d be a little creeped out at the re-instagram.
