Being an indie business owner has a lot of perks – but I admit, that the fluctuating income is one of the harder things to handle.
One way to even out your income when sales are slow is to start offering services.
There are many business owners out there that need your services and expertise. You can easily add on an extra $500 or more to your monthly income by freelancing a few hours per week.
Here is a sample break down of how I got that number:
$25 per hour x 20 hours = $500 extra per month
20 hours per month / 4 weeks = Working an extra 5 hours per week
It is very common for freelancers to make $25 or more per hour at the following types of jobs:
Virtual Assistant – As a virtual assistant or “VA,” you could handle all different types of work for business owners, from answering email , scheduling their blog posts, finding affiliate programs for them to join or affiliates for their programs, making travel arrangements, and more.
Marketing / Social Media Manager – In this type of job, you would handle a business owner’s marketing – from finding places to advertise to sending tweets and posting status updates, and everything in between.
Graphic Design – This one is probably self-explanatory. As a graphic designer, you would be creating graphics for your clients. It could be a header, an ad, an ebook cover, etc.
Web / Blog Design – Lots of people want to start a blog or a website. Few people actually know how to design a blog. If you are skilled at this, you can make a lot of extra money. (I know people who charge over $800 to customize a WordPress blog)
Ghostwriter – Again, lots of people want blogs and websites, but few people like to write. People NEED content. If you are a good writer, you can earn extra money by writing for other people’s blogs and websites, as well as creating ebooks, etc.
Copywriter – Copywriting is one of those rare skills. If you can write good copy, people will pay you to create sales pages, write item descriptions, emails, and more.
Editing & Design – Digital publishing is the “it” thing (and I can only imagine that it will grow in popularity). People want to create ebooks to earn extra income and promote their business, but not everyone has the time or talent. If you can take someone’s content and make it look pretty, you can start a freelance career in editing and design!
Transcription – Many website owners are now using audio (teleseminars, podcasts, etc) and they need people to transcribe the audio into written form. (I know transcriptionists who earn about $50 to transcribe a 60 minute audio.)
PR Assistant – Do you read the daily HARO emails? They are full of reporters seeking people to interview for stories. Many business owners do not have time to read these emails (or simply don’t know they exist). If you’re already reading them, why not take on some clients? Respond to the requests that match your clients’ profiles. You can also contact blog owners and other media directly, to see if they would like to feature your clients. You’ll be helping some business owners get great feature stories and you’ll be earning some extra income!
Online Event Planner – Many people host online events, from teleseminars to webinars to Twitter Parties, Facebook chats and more. You can earn extra income by helping business owners create and plan these events.
