Why Remote Working Works For Me

Did you know that November is “Remote Working Month?”

The term “remote working” may sound a bit foreign to you, as it’s not a concept we talk about a lot as business owners. Most of us probably relate it to telecommuters, someone who has a job with a company, but works from home.

As independent business owners, we are used to working from home. But what about the times when we need to work when we’re not at home? Well, in those instances, we’re working remotely. And many of us do this on a regular, if not daily, basis.

I have a smartphone (iPhone) and I use it to check and respond to my email throughout the day. Sometimes, I need to get my nephews on or off the bus, and I take my laptop over to my sister’s and work from there. A couple of friends and I try to get together regularly for writing sessions, and this means working from my friend’s table over coffee and chit-chat.

As a community manager for Chevy, I am contracted through a PR firm based in Texas. I stay connected to them, and the other bloggers, through Skype and Google Docs. Thanks to these remote working tools, we can all share our work, and we all know what is going on with the group, and what we need to do individually.

And there are times at night when I’ve already turned off my computer but get a great idea. So, I grab my phone and am able to capture that idea, and I can even draft out a blog post.

The ability to work remotely has definitely changed my life, and I’m sure it’s changed your life, too. It’s just not something we tend to think about, as the technology is something that surrounds us all the time.

But take just a moment and think about how this technology, and the ability to use it, has changed your life and your business. How are using these tools to work remotely? How has it affected your life?

To see how others are working remotely, take a look at the Office 365 Faceboook page and also follow them on Twitter.
