Managing Your Biz

  • Winter Biz Tasks: Stuff To Keep You Busy In A Snowstorm

It’s winter. And you’re probably not spending a lot of time outside (unless you’re a pro snowboarder or something).

It can be very easy to sit on the couch and watch TV while the snow is falling outside. Trust me, I know. I’ve recently become addicted to Sons of Anarchy.

That being said, there are a lot of things that you can do while watching TV and getting snowed in. Here are a few ideas:

    • Clean Up Your Website Create a new header, freshen up your sidebars, etc
    • Outline Blog Posts – You can create outlines of several blog posts and save them as drafts; when you have blogger’s block, go through your drafts, flesh it out a bit, and publish!
    • Clean Out Your Reader – If you use Google Reader, and it’s been a while since you logged in, you might find hundreds of new blog posts to read. I realize it’s hard to read blog posts and watch TV at the same time, but you can skim through them! You can save the ones you want to read in depth, and clear out the ones that you don’t.
    • Go Through Email – As with the above statement, it can be hard to focus on what you’re reading and watching at the same time, but you can always go through your inbox, label what you want to save, and delete the junk.
    • Get Social – Facebook and Twitter can suck you in – big time. But they don’t require a lot of focus or attention. So why do a little marketing / social networking while watching back episodes of Veronica Mars on Netflix through your Wii? That’s what I do while watching those back episodes!

See? You CAN get some stuff done while loafing around on the couch. Now, grab some snacks, a DVD, and relax (while working).

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Stay Focused!

2011 starts TOMORROW! Are you ready to make it the most awesome year, ever? Good! Now, try and stay focused! Make your goals and keep working toward them. It’s easy to get distracted by things – whether it is simply spending too much time on Facebook or trying 6 new businesses in a year.

Stay away from “shiny objects” — and keep focused on your business! You’ll get much farther this year if you work on your goals!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Take Care Of Yourself

It’s hard to work when you don’t feel good, are tired, or stressed. That’s why it’s important to take care of yourself in the New Year. Make sure you get lots of rest, take breaks, exercise, and eat healthy.

All of these things are related. By staying healthy, you will have more energy and stamina to keep working on your business!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Set Goals

The first tip I gave you in this series was to create a schedule – and now I’m telling you to set goals. If you ignore all of the other tips and only remember these two, your business will still improve over the next year. (of course, if you apply the other tips as well, your business will do even better.)

If you don’t have any goals set, you’re just flying by the seat of your pants. Which might be okay – and you can certainly make money by doing so, but you won’t make as much as you could if you set goals and made a plan for achieving them.

Think of the big goal first – and then work backward, breaking the big goal down into small chunks.

And don’t forget to give yourself a reward for each “mini goal” that you reach!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Keep Learning!

The fact that you are on this site is a good indicator that you are already trying to learn new things, enhance your skills, etc.  This is a good thing, because the more you learn, the more you can grow your biz in the next year.

Make a list of some of the things you’d like to learn this year. It could be anything from taking better pictures to getting listed in the search engines to writing a press release.

Make an effort to learn something new each month. You’ll be surprised at how many new things you can do at the end of the year!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Believe In Yourself

This may seem very simple – but it is probably something a lot of you are not doing! In order for your business to be a real success, you have to believe in yourself!

I’m not trying to get all airy-fairy, but try visualizing yourself with the success you want. Really picture it! Imagine how great it will feel to reach your goals.

Keep that picture and feeling in your mind – especially when you have “down days” or are feeling overwhelmed. Know that you can make that image in your mind a reality if you keep going!

    Now, get to work!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Outsource

If you are feeling overwhelmed and can’t complete all of the things you want to within your business, consider outsourcing some of your tasks in 2011.

For example, if you are too busy making product to market your wares, hire someone to do that for you. Too busy to blog? Hire someone to write a few posts for you. Don’t understand SEO? Don’t ignore it – just outsource it!

And if you’re concerned about the cost, don’t worry. You don’t have to hire a full-time staff. You can simply hire someone for a few hours – you’d be amazed at how much someone can do in a short time.

Also try bartering your product or trading “hours” with them. If you’re a great graphic designer, the writer who is writing your blog posts may trade you some blog posts for a great new graphic!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Use Tech Tools

Running a business is hard work, but there are many tools that can make it easier. If you are dragging your feet on technology, it’s time to embrace them!

Did you know that if you have a smartphone and use WordPress for blogging, you can download an app and do all of your blogging from your phone? Speaking of blogging, if you want to take a couple of days off, you can pre-write blogs and schedule them to appear throughout the week. You can also do that with your tweets by using a Twitter app called HootSuite. And don’t forget you can automate your email newsletter by using an autoresponder!

There are many tools that can help you keep your business running smoothly – even when you are having a frazzled, busy day!

  • 10 Biz Tips For The New Year: Be Consistent

One of the best tips I can give you to help you grow your business in the coming year is to be consistent. Yeah, sounds pretty simple – but it’s easier said than done!

We all have things that get “in the way.” That’s life. But if you let them get in front of your business, they can pile up over time and completely block you from your biz.

I work a full-time job outside of the home – in addition to Indie Biz Chicks and other websites. I don’t always have time when I get home to cook dinner, clean the house AND blog! I understand what you are going through!

The key is to work with the time you have – and really work. Chatting on Facebook or Twitter might be fun – but it isn’t necessarily work. Yes, they are great marketing tools, but if you just spent an hour talking about peanut butter cookies, you aren’t marketing your biz (unless you make and sell peanut butter cookies).

That hour would have been better spent by blogging, making product, or writing your newsletter, etc. And you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in an hour if you sit down and really work!

Remember – put in the time you can – and do it regularly!
