Copywriting Class

Some people would say that copywriting is an art form, and honestly, I don’t think those people are too far off base when they say that. Now, don’t worry. If you don’t know the first thing about copywriting, you can still learn!

Copywriting is the art of selling through words. Whenever you type up an item description, create a sales page, or talk about one of your products in a blog post, you are creating copy aka …. copywriting!

Consider the following tips your Intro To Copywriting Class:

Explain the benefits, not the features: I always use the example of a coffeemaker when I explain this, because it is something everyone can relate to. If you go to the store, you’ll notice that every coffeemaker has  a lot of technical features listed on the box. But what really sells the coffeemaker are the BENEFITS.

If I were writing the copy on that box I would explain how the coffeemaker can make your life so much easier by allowing you to prepare your morning coffee the night before. You just set it and forget it. When you wake up, there will be a hot cup of coffee ready for you! And the best part is that you can choose from 3 different brewing sizes, so whether you want to re-create an authentic espresso or brew a cup to go in your favorite travel mug, you can do it quickly and easily.

Do you see the difference? The features are great — but the benefits draw you in and make you feel as though you can’t live without the product!

Bring out the emotions: Do you ever watch a commercial that makes you want to cry? Chances are, you remember the ones that pull at your heart strings. Don’t be afraid to use words that stir up emotions in people. When someone feels emotionally charged about a product, they form a sort of “bond” with it.

Don’t oversell it: One important thing to remember is not to oversell it. Don’t promise something that isn’t going to happen. That’s not copywriting. That’s lying. Be honest and truthful – but be honest and truthful in the most wonderfully exciting way.

Create a call to action: Don’t forget to close with a call to action. If you go through the trouble of telling people how great your product (or service) is and make them feel as though they can’t live without it, and then end with a “thanks for looking, see ya later” type of conclusion, people are going to be left hanging. And so will your sales. End with a call to action! Say something that will inspire them to buy your product or service right now! For example “to grab this special deal before the price goes up, click here.”

Copywriting may seem a bit difficult at first. It can be hard to think of the right words to use to introduce  your product or service in a way that makes people stand up and give you their full attention. But practice does make perfect. So push your fears (and procrastination) aside, and keep writing.
