More Web Traffic Doesn’t Always Mean More Money

I was listening to a news program on the radio while driving in my car yesterday. I’ve tried to find a link, but I can’t find one, so I’m just going to give you a synopsis. The reporter was talking about YouTube, and how they announced they now have 1 Billion monthly visitors, which is basically half of all Internet users. We can all agree that 1 billion monthly visitors is beyond HUGE, but the question is: Is YouTube actually making money from that traffic?

The fact is, more traffic doesn’t always mean more money.

Yes, there are some videos that have ads attached to them, and there is money generated from the ad sales. But most videos don’t have ads. YouTube has created a place where lots of people go to for (free) entertainment, but they don’t sell a product or service, so there really isn’t much money coming in.

This can happen to your website or blog, too.

If you don’t have a way to make money, how are you going to profit from your web traffic?

What products or services are you going to offer? Can you offer anything in addition to what you are currently offering?
