My Interview with Ira Grant

  1. Tell us about your business.
  2. I design and make handbags and other accessories in Neuchatel, Switzerland and sell them on Etsy, Dawanda, and a few local boutiques. You can see more of what I make on my Etsy shop, iragrant.etsy.com.

  3. How did you get first started in your craft?
  4. I moved to Switzerland from London in 2003.  Because of my lack of French, I tried and failed for a year to find a job.  I had thought I could find work without the need to speak French.  So, I went back to what I love to do to fill my days.  I make so many things from jewelry to clothes to home décor to batik painting.  I always love craft making activities and I took many courses in fashion, accessories, and jewelry design because of that.  I never thought to use it as a source of income.  I’m quite lucky, even thought we don’t have a big shopping center here in Neuchatel, we do have some beautiful independent shops that are supportive to the local artists.  Since 2004, some of them are still selling my bags.  Since then, I have never looked back.  This is what I love to do and I will continue to do so.

  5. What is your favorite thing(s) about being a small business owner?
  6. My working time is flexible and I can organize my work according to my little family life.  I also can try my new ideas without a problem because this is my own business.

  7. What are you planning to do with your business in the future?
  8. I want this business to grow with a strong foundation but still with the artisan feeling.  In other words, handmade work is still the core of my business.  Last month I moved my work to my own studio, atelier, and I also use it as a show room for my work where my clients can come and see how I work and chat with me.  I also would love to produce more different new lines in the future, and of course I would love to be recognized more than I am now.
