7 Reasons NOT To Hire A Professional Copywriter – guest post by Karri Flatla

Choosing the right person to write your web copy—to wordsmith a message that resonates deeply with your online audience—can be an intimidating decision. Conversions are not guaranteed, and each copywriter applies a unique process and voice to client projects.

What’s a marketing-conscious entrepreneur to do?

Easy.

Instead of getting all strategic with your website copy, what about pushing aside the investment decision altogether?

Seriously.

Screw your brand or your story or giving people reasons to buy. Give yourself permission right now to stop talking to copywriters, to stop getting quotes, to stop Facebooking folks for referrals, and to stop all the crazy making that comes with trying to do what’s best for the future of your business.

For Heaven’s sake, it’s web copy, not War and Peace.

Now, in case you doubt your decision to avoid publishing great copy on your website, I’ve created this handy-dandy checklist of 7 reasons NOT to hire a professional copywriter. One or many may apply.

Before you review the list, always say to yourself first, “I don’t need to hire a copywriter right now because…”

And then pick and choose the reason(s) that best fit your current situation:

1) I can copy and paste the text from the brochure I wrote 3 years ago.
2) I need more time to screw around with my marketing strategy.
3) My website logo and tag line are so hot no one will care about the copy.
4) My sister-in-law wrote a nice poem once. I’m sure she can write my copy for cheap.
5) I blew my budget on unicorns and rainbows. A message with substance will have to wait.
6) I’m the only one who gets the value I offer. Why not keep the mystery alive?
7) I’ve decided to write my own copy. There’s plenty of time between now and 2020.

And just like that, you’re off the hook.

Say nothing. Expect nothing.

Internet marketing can be just that easy.

  1. I think the point that hit home the most with your post is that it’s best to make a decision and move on. If the marketer is going to hire a copywriter, they should make the call and move forward. If they aren’t going to hire on, they need to decide and take action. The time that is wasted agonizing over a decision is time and energy spent that does nothing to move a business toward a successful outcome.
