Online Business Anxieties

Different people dream of starting an online business for different reasons. It may be due to financial reasons and needing extra money, while another person may be a new mom who doesn’t want to leave their child in daycare.

While their reasons for starting a business may vary, one thing that many people have in common are anxieties over starting their business. Here are ten common internet business start up worries – and some reassurances to help you feel better.

1. I don’t know what I want to do: This question can be difficult to answer – but not because your choices are limited. There are actually so many options, it can be hard to choose just one!

2. How much does it cost to begin an online business? The costs depend on the service or product you are basing your business on. Thankfully, setting up an online business is very affordable. You can realistically get started for under $100!

3. What equipment do I need? To start an online business, you will need an up-to-date computer with high speed internet. Depending on the type of business you are starting, you may need other software, of course. For example, a graphic designer will need a good graphics program.

4. How much time does it take to get set up? If you know how to set up your own website, you can get started in a day or so! If you need to hire someone, it will take a bit longer to go through the interview process and so forth.

5. What should I name my business? This is an important decision – your business name identifies you from everyone else. Doing a domain search will let you know whether the name you are thinking about is already taken or not.

6. Do I need a web host? Every website needs a web host to manage it. When choosing a host, be sure that they can accommodate the bandwidth you will need for you site. If you plan to upload pictures, open a virtual store, play videos, and more, you will need a web host which can expand your space as you need it. Don’t just choose the cheapest host. Look for one which will meet your needs now and as your business grows.

7. How soon can I start making money with my online business? The answer to this question is up to you. It all depends on how well you market your new business (after all, people can’t buy from you if they don’t know you exist!) Consider creating a marketing plan to help make the most of your efforts.

8. How important is my website’s ranking? Generally speaking, most people don’t look beyond the first page of their search results. Having your website listed as closely as possible to the #1 spot in the search results will bring you lots of visitors.

9. How do I start marketing my business? I could go on and on about this topic (it’s one of my favorites). Some easy – and affordable options – include setting up a MySpace or Facebook page and visiting forums to meet and network with people; setting up a blog to communicate with potential clients, and submitting press releases, both online and locally.

10. How do I get paid? For services, most businesses use PayPal. It is a way to set up a secure account that can be used to pay for services and receive money from clients and customers. Most people that do business online are familiar with PayPal. You can also set up your site to accept credit card payments.

Everyone has questions when it comes to their business. You are not alone!
