Show me your town. I totally want to bump it.

A funny thing happened at a party last weekend. I met a dude and we were having a conversation when my sister misheard something he said. He said “get a lump sum” and my sister heard “ghettobump.” Needless to say, “ghettobump” became the catch phrase of the night.  I looked at the dude and was like “We should start a blog called ghettobump.”

And now, we are. Really. Seriously. I’m making a website with a boy. In person. Needless to say, this is going to be a learning experience. I’m pretty used to working alone. I told him I’m going to really try not to be too bossy. He told me he’s not easily intimidated.  Which is a good thing, as we all know I am an ‘honest, tell-it-like-it-is” kinda girl. Add in my ability to go after what I want, and well, most dudes would probably be pretty intimidated by that……

So, when we first started brainstorming, Ghettobump.com was just gonna be a funny site full of weird oddball pictures. We were gonna create it, get some traffic flowing and sell it.

And then yesterday, things got serious. We decided to really do something. To tell actual stories. And to help people.

Here’s the plan, in a nutshell: Show pictures of towns and their weird stuff. But the best of the weird. The stuff that defines that town’s personality. That’s the story-telling part. And the helping people part? Well, if your town has something it wants to save – like a historic building, or something else you want to save, let us know. Our goal is to find corporate sponsors to save those places.

The dude I’m partnering with (let’s call him Joe… because well, his name is Joe) and I are both from Flint, Michigan. We know what it’s like to live in a place that’s best days are behind it. But that doesn’t mean we’ve given up hope.  We want to see people be proactive about making their towns a better place to live instead of sitting there and complaining about things.

So, before we can start helping people make a change, we need to get the site bumpin’, and that’s where you come in! Send me your submissions!!! Email me pictures and the stories behind them to info[at]indiebizchicks[dot]com

We can totally make this happen. And trust me, we’re in it for the long haul. We just need a little help from you to start helping others.

  1. I’m really on this kick lately of looking at vacation homes and even homes that people rent out by the room.

This seems to somehow fit (not sure how) with the idea you have for your site. Maybe you can interview some of the people who rent out the rooms, or maybe you can go stay at some of them, or maybe you can just let people who want to travel to some of these places with the fun stories themselves (and become an affiliate of the site).

Anyway, I just thought the site might work with your plan somehow: airbnb.com

Cool that you’re making a new site -you make good stuff! (lucky boy to get to partner with you 😉

  2. Angela,
It’s funny you said that! We’ve already talked about doing a travel area. We were talking about traveling, and how the traveler’s perception can be so different than what day to day life is really like – esp if the traveler only goes to the touristy things in that town.

So, Joe was like “Well, what if we have a ‘Correct Me If I’m Wrong / In Case You Missed It’ section, where travelers and locals can talk about the towns, etc.

We have some big plans! Now, we just need to put it together and make it happen!
